What is the best way to take pictures of art in 2D?

I have a Canon EOS 400 D Rebel XTi and am trying to pull manual. I no idea how to configure the device to obtain a good image. I make a connection to a fluorescent ceiling above and a Sylvania light bulb on one side. I have the artwork on the wall with a black background. I try to find more information about the correct exposure settings, etc., I have the kit lens – EFS 18-55mm. I intend to get a macro lens soon, but we must take a good picture now. So now my attention is good, but the color is way off. Painting, I'm taking a picture of it Dark Blue and purple with a white light yellow zone. First, using mixed lighting so of course the color balance can cause problems.
