Candle Making Molds – Everything You’ve Ever Wanted To Know
There are numerous shapes and sizes that candle making molds come in. From tapers to pillars you will find the mold that suits the style of candle you want to make. These molds can be made from a variety of materials. Some materials are better than others for these molds.
The durability of the mold will depend upon what it is made from. So this is important to think about if you will be making a lot of candles. It is not so important however if you are just making a candle every so often. If you are a beginner you may not want to buy the more durable candle making molds right off the bat because they are more expensive. Let’s look at what the various types of molds are.
Plastic Molds while being the least expensive are not the most durable of the molds. But if you are a novice at making candles then you may want to start with these cheaper molds. They wash up nicely with just soap and water. These molds will scratch easier than the other molds though, which could show up on the finished product.
Many flexible types of molds are available today. Silicone molds have become a popular kind of these molds, mainly due to no release agents needing to be used, to remove the finished candle. Latex Molds are also popular due to their durability and can be seamless in the designs they produce. The other material that these flexible molds can be made of is polyurethane. These molds are great for making taper and pillar candles. You will need an agent to help release the finished candle, and the odor from the mold can be infused into the candle.
Aluminum molds are probably the most used of the candle making molds. These are extremely durable and are more affordable than the flexible molds are. Since they are rigid molds the candles have a very professional appearance. These are great for votive and pillar candles. These molds can be cleaned easily; they just need to be heated to a temperature of 150 degrees Fahrenheit to remove the wax residue. These have to have a releasing agent for the candle to be removed from them.
Now the molds described here are the manufactured molds for candles. However, you can make a candle in anything that will withstand hot wax being poured into it. You could even make a shape in a container of sand and pour melted wax into it, placing the wick in first of course, and see what kind of candle you get.
